Thinking of Nothing

Try to think of nothing
Are you thinking of nothing?
But because you think you
are thinking of nothing,
you are, in actuality,
thinking of something.

Can you empty your mind?
Go and give it a try.
The fact that you think
you have emptied your mind
means that your mind is
really not empty at all.

No matter what you say,
or what it is you do,
no matter how hard you try,
you can never stop thinking.
Because that bit of awareness
keeps your mind alive.

Author’s Notes (may contain spoilers):

I’ve been a bit off my game with the posting lately. Hopefully, I’ll be able to pick it up in the next couple weeks. In the meantime, read this poem.

This poem is about something I experience when I try those meditation exercises that require you to clear your mind. It led me to Rule 26: You can never stop thinking, the subject of this poem. The mental effort you take to try and clear your head is, in itself, a form of thinking. Your mind can’t stop, but it’s this constant thinking that makes you who you are.

Don’t have much more to say about this one.
